Sound is an important feature to a trailer and this is because the sound creates tension, which adds to the effect of the trailer urging the viewer to want to watch the movie. Within the Sound Design task many features will be included to try and get an idea upon how our trailers will sound like, reviews upon different trailers will be included. Softwares such as Garage Band and Adobe Premiere Pro will be used towards the creation of how the trailer will sound like.
Inspirations
As part of the Inspiration section, 6 Trailers will be assessed upon the use of their sound, this is being done to be able to get an example upon the sort of sounds that our trailer will sound like, many of these trailers will mostly be related to what sounds will be added into our trailer.
Evil DeadAs part of our Storyboard Trailer we chose Evil Dead for the way our shots should change. Upon completion of the Storyboard the sounds from Evil Dead seemed to compliment our trailer storyboard therefore the Evil Dead soundtrack will definitely be used. The Horror trailer is set in a forest therefore uses of forest sounds can be implemented into our horror trailer making Evil dead the most inspirational.

Friday the 13THVery steady and slow opening to the trailer, with a voice over of a story line. Establishing shot of a forest whilst sounds also bolster the effect of the scenery. Music is played at the start, with teenagers laughing, and having fun showing the Equilibrium, Music stops and instead score begins to play as the trailer goes into its disequilibrium, this is an Inspirational trailer as it follows similar scenes that our trailer will be using also a similar theme.

The blair witch project |
Wrong turn |
The trailer begins with a monologue of a woman crying, and then an unrealistic monstrous laugh. The background is very eerie and very low clanks of noises are heard. The usage of quiet to loud noises is a very inspirational trailer effect and these type of sound effects will be used within our trailer.
|
Very great start to the trailer, uses of screeching and glitches, the development of the story to impact the audience. Shots are unison with the sound effects and beats of the trailer. Score starts to increase speed as the trailer begins to take more shots, and sound effects on attacks from antagonist are well timed, making this a very inspirational trailer.
|
The cabin in the woodsThe trailer starts off with a score that indicates happiness or joy which relates to the Equilibrium, as many other trailers the song is then stopped and fades away which that in itself builds up the play, by indicating that something wrong is going to happen. A new score is played to build the horror play, this is an inspirational trailer as the sounds would work well with our trailer.
|
The ForestThis is a good trailer as it resembles our trailer due to it being a trailer set in the forest therefore all sound effects can be reused within our trailer such as the thuds, forest sounds and also a similar score. The score that is used within the The Forest trailer complements all actions that happen allowing for a good reaction of the audience, and also a good build up of tension.

Software for project
This is the Software section of the Sound design towards our trailer. Adobe Premier Pro is the most useful Project within the Sound Design process.
There are many different files within the Sound Folder on the Mac Computers. These Include Beats, Clanks, Drones, Electronic, Glass, Glitches, Heartbeats, Iconic, Liquids, Mechanical, Medical, Metal, Music, SFX, Swishes, Thuds, Voices, Water, Wind and Wood. The main sound effects that we will be using will be: Crashes, Clanks, Thuds, Voices, Wood, Wind, Music and along the line more will be added to the Trailer music.
Thud Horror Sound Effect:
This is the first effect that caught our teams eye as a sound effect for our trailer, this is because most if not all trailers include a thud sound effect and it would relate well to establish emotions, creating a realistic horror effect, this can be used within any part of the trailer.

HOW I MADE IT WORK!
MARKER
The file on top is a screen recording used by Quicktime player, it shows how to get the markers and how I used them to allocate different sounds within that area.
|
KEYFRAMES
The file on the top shows how to use the Keyframe tool, through the use of Quicktime Player. (It allows me to screen record.)
|
The image on the left shows the tool used on Adobe Premiere Pro. This is a marker sign and it points out on the bottom and top of the sound or clip in which I can then remember where to put a sound to complement that area.
|
The image shows the use of Keyframes on Adobe Premiere Pro, this enables me to increase or decrease the sound. Adding more key frames can allow for different lengths of sound for it to go from normal to a higher sound, vice versa. The essential use of this can allow for building up scenes such as going lower before an event or jump scare is about to happen, and then higher from that point on.
|
MUTE
|
PLAY HEAD
|
The mute tool is very important to use on Adobe Premiere Pro and this is because it allows to avoid listening to multiple sounds simultaneously without needing to delete the sound. This allows for more efficiency and less time waste.
|
The image above shows a screen shot, taken upon Adober Premiere Pro and shows the blue Play head. The playhead is very useful in Adobe Premiere Pro as it allows for trimming, and putting sounds in specific places to make a quality Sound trailer.
|
SOUNDS:
Beats
A beat is a sound effect that has a rhythmic pattern and are usually used in songs. Within horror trailers beats allow to create tension by building up to a certain scene or event. Beats are effective for trailers for example beats are used in the trailer "Wrong Turn", whilst the establishing shot was being shown of the forest and the protagonist were walking towards an abandoned house.
|
Clanks
The sound effects of clanks are very useful in horror trailers as they give the audience a spine-chilling sensation, especially if the antagonist is about to pounce on their victim. Clanks are usually buildups in horror trailers and tend to get louder until the final scene in which a jump scare will happen, to finally catch the audience off guard.
|
Electronic
Electronic sound effects have to be used wisely in horror trailers for example an Electronic sound effect can not be used in a trailer set in the forest as it would not make sense or flow. Electronic sounds consist of electrical noises such as voltages, wires, and technological sounds.
|
Metal
The Metal sound effect is a great sound effect especially within horror trailers when the victim may be walking through a tunnel, metal sound effects can be used to act as though someone is around hitting a metallic object on metallic surroundings, this immediately creates fear upon the audience.
|
Glass
|
Glitches
Glitches are very useful within Horror trailers especially for the beginning and ending of films, to present cast or trailer name. Glitches can also be used for captions, they are very technological sounds.
|
Heartbeats
|
Voices
Voices are a very unique sound effect that can be used in trailers. It almost puts the audience within the victims/antagonists position from the words that are being said.
|
Liquids
Liquids is not a common horror trailer sound effect however can be used to over express blood spillage or spraying. Liquid sound effects can also be used with other sound effects to make a certain scene much more realistic, for example chemicals dropping, water dropping on the floor. The more chaos involved the more horror like the trailer becomes, therefore sound effects would need to back that up.
|
Mechanical
Mechanical sound effects are being used a lot more within the modern day and age and this is due to technology convergence, being of which audiences want to see more things that have not been made therefore more sound effects that have been unheard of need to be used. Mechanical usually involves a robotic antagonist, therefore mechanical are used, such as The Terminator.
|
SFX
SFX stands for Sound Effects/Special Effects. In terms of special effects for sound, this involves a lot of ambiguous sounds that can be used to either transition from one shot to another.
|
Music
Music is used within horror trailers to set a scene, to portray the atmosphere and can be used to allow for a scene to flow within a section in the trailer. Music can allow to set the mood for different parts of the trailer such as sad/slow music played when someone dies, fast/dramatic music when the antagonist is chasing the victim.
|
Swishes
Swishes are similar to Glitches in a sense of where they are usually positioned within horror trailers. Swishes are usually positioned within the start or end of a trailer, and also within the caption areas. However Swishes can also be used with shots within a film such as when a vehicle passes through at speed.
|
Thuds
Thuds are most likely the most used sound effect within trailers that relate to Horror. Almost every Horror trailer has thuds in them, a good example of a thud being used would be Babadook as the thuds bring upon fear towards the audience as the noise is ambiguous and unseen, The use of thuds in Babadook allowed for a much more frightening approach.
|
Wind
Wind is used within Horror trailer, almost as a distraction towards the audience to acknowledge that the antagonist is cold, and at this point an attack could be made by the antagonist.
Water
Water is a cool sound effect and can also be used within horror trailers especially in a forest to just add to the audiences imagery of the surroundings. The water effect can also distract the audience allowing for a pop-up or jump scare within the trailer.

SOUND TRAILER Animatic
The sound trailer below contains different types of Sudden noises, sounds that allow tension building and although very minimal technological noises. The task was a difficulty level of intermediate, and also very time consuming, this is because it involved a lot of timing for the sound effects on each shot within the trailer. Due to our trailer being set in the forest many different sound effects did not relate to our trailer and therefore because of this sound effects had to be chosen strictly towards the setting making the task harder to complete.
First one: This was my first sound trailer animatic and although it was really good it kept the audience hanging at the end which wasnt really what was needed, instead I decided to make another one...
|
Second One: The second sound trailer animatic is quite similar to the first one although the ending has been altered slightly, which almost gives off a better finishing touch to the trailer sound.

SOUND DESIGN SUMMARY
The Sound Design task was very difficult as it involved alot of trial and error in order to get to the finishing position of the task. The inspirations part of the Sound Design task was at an average difficulty and this is because finding trailer sounds that represented or had a similar bond with our trailer took a bit time, especially needing to watch and talk about the trailer after. As part of the Inspirations task I decided to rate each trailer by their sound use and how the complimented our trailer. Some sounds from the inspirations were relatively used within our trailer and it allowed us to gain a better quality of work.
